Happy Thanksgiving

Wild Turkeys

Are these wild? Wild turkeys come through our yard a few times a year but any noise sets them running. We would never get so close.

Yes, they are wild. We had one at our house once but it flew away, across the lake as soon as we opened the door. A neighbor on the other side of the lake feeds the wild turkeys and we took these photos on a morning walk. There are 10 or 15 in the area that don't seem so skittish.

The top one with the black bill is a Snowy Egret. It is smaller than the Great Egret which is seen below with the yellow bill.

Yes, that is it. We saw one at a rest stop on June 5,2014. We were travelling on the I5, and were a hundred or more miles from Grapevine. Its breast was pure yellow, and it had flown into a tall tree. I did not hear it sing. I saw no other Kingbirds. It was afternoon.

We saw a few red-breasted mergansers at Bolsa Chica. There were many more females (top) than males. The red-breasted mergansers are about the same size as the common mergansers and much larger than the hooded mergansers.

Maybe it's the 70 degree weather and sunshine, but this coot photo from Huntington Beach came out better than the one on Lake Nelson.

Western Grebe

The Bolsa Chica Wetlands are a restored habitat in Huntington Beach, California. Here is a photo of a Western Grebe. It is at least twice the size of the pied-billed grebe we occasionally see in New Jersey.

The American White Pelican does not dive for food like the brown pelican. It feeds while swimming. We were surprised to see a group of pelicans fishing together.
